Learn some gift ideas for midwife from a mom of three who asked and gifted!

This is a super exciting post for me to write because, at the time of writing, I recently delivered my baby (#3) at a birthing center, surrounded by some incredible midwives, including women of color, which was a huge blessing.

They worked so hard to bring our baby safely into the world, and I couldn’t be more grateful. That appreciation has inspired this post – sharing some of the best gifts to show gratitude for these amazing women.

At a recent appointment, I actually asked them myself, “What gifts do midwives really love?” Here’s what they told me! Let’s dive in.

1. Thank You Gift for Midwife – Show Your Appreciation with Something Thoughtful

A thank-you gift can be as simple as a heartfelt photo card or as personal as a handmade item. After our first birth, we sent a photo card of our family taken at the birthing center along with an e-gift card to a favorite local restaurant.

The midwives appreciated it so much! Midwives truly treasure these small gestures, especially photo cards that show the families they’ve helped bring together.

You could also add a thank-you card to a larger gift, like a gift basket (more on that below!) or even combine it with other items on this list for an extra special thank you.

2. Unique Gift for Midwife – Handmade and Crafted Items

If you’re looking for a unique gift for your midwife, consider something handmade or crafted. During our chat, one of the midwives showed me several items in her office – drawings, beaded pieces, and little crafted items.

These were all gifts from grateful families and added a special, personal touch to the space. Midwives love these items because they’re truly one of a kind and reflect the thought and effort behind the gift.

If you’re crafty, this could be the perfect way to show your appreciation. Or, support a local artist who can create something meaningful just for them! One of my midwives pointed out the beautiful artwork displayed in her office that she adores! Here are some pics!

3. Gift Basket for Midwife – Curate a Collection of Thoughtful Items

If you want to make your gift a bit more elaborate, a midwife gift basket is a wonderful option! Here are some great ideas to include in the basket:

Gift Card – Pick one from a local restaurant or café they love.

Bottle of Wine or Relaxing Tea – Something to help them unwind after a busy day.

Personalized Mug or Cup – They’re always on the go and love having something special to sip from.

Relaxing Items – A candle (maybe personalized this too, bath salts, or a cozy blanket.

Make it as personal as possible to show that you’ve thought about what would bring them joy and comfort. The beauty of a gift basket is that you can mix and match these items based on what you know they’ll love! Add a photo or drawing.

4. Christmas Gift for Midwife – Celebrate the Season with Meaningful Gifts

If you’re preparing a holiday gift, think about items that are both thoughtful and useful. A spa gift card is a wonderful Christmas gift for your midwife, giving her a chance to unwind and treat herself.

Many midwives work tirelessly, so a little R&R goes a long way. You might also consider a holiday-themed gift basket with treats, a cozy blanket, or something festive.

Adding a personal touch – like a card with a warm holiday message or a little ornament – makes it even more special.

5. Gift for Home Birth Midwife – Support Their Passion with a Cause-Driven Gift

If you’re working with a home birth midwife, consider gifts that also support their passion for safe, natural births. In the Phoenix area, there’s a fantastic organization that releases a new T-shirt each month, with proceeds supporting home birth services.

Buying a T-shirt or making a donation in your midwife’s name is a unique and thoughtful way to say thank you while contributing to a cause they’re passionate about.

Homebirth.org is a great resource, and their work can make a positive impact on the midwifery community in Phoenix, AZ.

6. Birth Gift for Midwife – Something Practical and Personal

After your baby is born, a simple birth gift is a wonderful way to show immediate appreciation. A gift card to a favorite restaurant is always a safe choice, especially if it’s a spot you know they frequent.

Midwives often work long hours and might appreciate a quick meal on the go, so ask about places they like or observe where they grab lunch. Another option is a personalized item – something small but meaningful, like a mug with the baby’s photo or a keepsake with their name.

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask What They’d Like!

If you’re uncertain about what your midwife would really enjoy, don’t be afraid to ask! At my last visit, I asked the midwives themselves, “What kinds of gifts do you really love?” and they were happy to share. Some said they loved food and drinks

– “We all have to eat, and we’re busy all the time!” one of them laughed. Others mentioned how much they appreciated thoughtful, handmade items. By asking, you can find out exactly what would bring joy to their day and know your gift will be meaningful.

8. Can Midwives Accept Gifts? Absolutely, and Here’s Why it’s Customary

Yes, it’s customary to give your midwife a gift, and they’re more than happy to accept! Midwives put so much energy into each family they work with, and a small gift goes a long way in showing your appreciation. These gifts don’t have to be elaborate.

It’s the thought and care behind them that matter most. Whether it’s a thank-you photo card or a gift basket, any gesture that shows you value their dedication and support will be cherished.

These gift ideas can be used as thank-you gifts, birthday gifts, or even Christmas gifts for your midwife. Remember, it’s the love and thought you put into the gift that makes it meaningful.

Midwives are incredible people who dedicate their lives to helping families, so any small way you can show appreciation will mean the world to them.
